Douglas writes:

If you want to take part in this big cause to redeem the streets back from the Crime and anti social behaviours and/ are interested in any street showcasing or you know any young people that are keen to dance for a better way of integrating to bring change to the community, please send me an email and we'll together continue transforming the places we all call home.

The echo expressed interest in the NRG dance projects we are doing in Liverpool and have already published one in their Liverpool daily issue, 15th November 2008.

Kids inspired by dance class

A UGANDAN performer is using the power of dance to get young people off the streets of Liverpool.

Douglas Sembuuze, 25, only moved to Prescot from the African country a year and a half ago, but has already attracted about 400 youngsters to his High NRG classes.

The scheme was put together after Doug went to teenage hangouts and spoke to young people about their passions, finding out their main interests were dance and music.

To get them interested, he performed a dance in the street and attracted an excited crowd, who then agreed to come along to his workshop.

High NRG was funded by a cash grant from the Prince’s Trust, which helps about 5,000 14 to 30-year-olds across the north west.

The organisation today highlighted Doug’s achievements at the start of the Prince’s Trust Youth Week.

Doug has now applied for another community grant from the trust to open a performance space at Prescot’s Oasis centre for a new project, called NRG U-TAN.

He said: “I am passionate about dance and music. Young people are passionate about dance and music.

“I think we can use this tool to communicate to them. They now have an alternative to drugs, gangs and violence.

“All the young people I have worked with have told me they prefer this alternative and the project really has stopped them from getting up to no good in the streets.

“Working with the Prince’s Trust has helped me get through to them and I think we have created something quite extraordinary here.”

A trust spokesman said: “More than 400 young people got involved in the music and dance events and workshops organised by Doug and his team of leaders.

“The project offered a sanctuary. It got young people off the streets, reduced crime and gang culture in the area, and encouraged young people to develop creative skills.”

Sunday 11th Feb 08 - Douglas in Bognor

Douglas travelled down from Liverpool to visit us in Bognor. He spent some time with Thelma, stayed with Margaret Truelove, attended the Friday Youth Night, caught up with Robert, was welcomed at Bognor Regis Baptist Church, had lunch with the homegroup leaders, walked on the Trundle with Paul and Kay, had tea with some of the trustees and went to the evening service!!!

After a restful weekend he returned to Liverpool!!! We hope he will visit for longer another time so that we can get to know him better. It was great to meet him and a really useful time.

December 21st 2007
Lighthouse Youth Dance Fest

This event went really well and you can open a word doc and read Douglas's full report here.

Hundreds of young people turned up to dance and compete and Douglas hopes that this will be the beginning of a fortnightly dance club. Please pray for him.

Douglas ends with this thought:

"I believe this is what youth work is all about. Thanks to the support that has enabled other people to enjoy the fruit of Youthworx East Africa.
I know Ian Wardle for so long has tirelessly worked hard in Uganda together with other team members. It’s now that the fruit of his work is coming to play. He took us on mission trips and from there we learnt how to serve. Today we and many others are in the UK serving in the Place he started."

This is Real Testimony: I was on the First mission team for Youthworx East Africa organized by Ian and silver in the year 2000. It was after my High school and together with a team of other 7 young people and we went to a place in the Eastern part of Uganda called Kamuli. I used to do dance as one of the presentations during the Mission trips never knowing that I would be here in England in 2007/2008 doing mission and particularly doing dance in some of the very rough areas of Liverpool.

Today nearly half of that mission team is here in the UK and other areas of the world doing missions. Thanks to the inspiration that we have gotten through the hard work and the blessings that support teams have been both here in the UK and also back Home in Uganda.

My Life in Liverpool

It’s been a good start.
I came to England in September and spent 4 nights in London before heading on to Liverpool. I can say I’ve found joy working with a different culture although there are things that just can’t compare to being home.

Liverpool Lighthouse Church is the church that I’m currently serving in as the youth worker. I am on placement under Careforce which is a UK charity that receives international volunteers and places them in the UK for a one year placement.

I volunteer with the Liverpool Lighthouse Church but am also part of an Organization called Love and Joy Ministries also based in Anfield, (located less than 100 meters from the Famous Liverpool Football ground).

Working with young people has been a learning but also a challenging experience.
From being a team member with YEA (Youthworx East Africa) team; Ian Wardle, Colin and Silver, I learned good training which made me very prepared for mission.
It was very good training ground for this mission I am currently doing in Liverpool

Working with the young people

Youth Dance club

At Lighthouse, I’m beginning a Dance Club together with a team of 12 young people, and the Club will be in the Lighthouse Auditorium beginning this January.
Prior to the Dance Club, there is an event that is scheduled for the 21st of December called, Lighthouse Youth Dance Fest, to showcase the Dance Talent in the region, but also to call for Young people’s involvement In the January weekly event.
